What to focus on
Zimbabwe works best as a southern Africa balance of waterfall scenery, strong safari, and one deeper heritage or river segment. Victoria Falls and Hwange already create a reliable first core.
Route logic
Six to eight days is the safest first route: two nights around Victoria Falls, three nights in Hwange, and then either a Zambezi-side add-on or a heritage stop such as Great Zimbabwe if the pacing still works.
Planning watchouts
Do not reduce Victoria Falls to a quick border stop. Zimbabwe improves when the waterfall, safari, and transfer rhythm are each given space instead of being flattened into a fast-moving regional add-on.
Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe Side): The Zimbabwe side is stronger for broad waterfall panoramas and the main viewing paths. In high-water months the impact is huge, but cameras and electronics need proper protection.
Hwange National Park
Hwange is less about covering distance and more about waterhole rhythm and camp location. A well-positioned camp can make even a single base feel very rewarding.
Mana Pools National Park
Mana Pools suits travelers who want walking safari, canoeing, or a quieter Zambezi feel, and it has a very different character from vehicle-heavy parks.
Great Zimbabwe
If you want Zimbabwe to feel like more than waterfalls and wildlife, Great Zimbabwe adds a rare precolonial stone-city heritage layer.
Matobo Hills
Matobo works well for rhino walks, granite scenery, and rock art, giving a strong contrast to the broader safari style of Hwange.
