What to focus on
Montenegro is unusually efficient because bay towns, lake scenery, and mountain parks all sit close together. Kotor Bay plus either Durmitor or Lake Skadar already creates a strong first route.
Route logic
Five to seven days is the safest first structure: two to three nights around Kotor Bay, then two nights in the mountains or around the lake. If time is short, keep one coast block and one inland block instead of chasing the whole country.
Planning watchouts
Do not assume Montenegro is frictionless just because it is small. Summer traffic, parking, and winding road time can easily weaken an overambitious plan.
Kotor Old Town
Kotor is really about the whole bay perspective after you climb above the old town, not only the lanes below. In good weather, the walls are best done early or late.
Perast
If Kotor feels too busy, Perast offers a calmer bay rhythm and works well with a short boat ride and a slower afternoon.
Durmitor National Park
Durmitor is where Montenegro's mountain value really appears, with Black Lake, alpine roads, and the Tara canyon adding a much stronger outdoor dimension.
Lake Skadar
Lake Skadar is an excellent buffer between coast and mountains, where viewpoints, boat timing, and nearby vineyard rhythm matter more than a long checklist.
Sveti Stefan
Sveti Stefan is more of a visual icon for the Montenegro coast. It is ideal for viewpoints and shoreline stops, but does not necessarily need a long stay.
