What to focus on
Kenya is strongest as a first safari when you keep the contrast clear: the Mara for predator drama, Amboseli for elephants and Kilimanjaro views, and one Rift Valley lake stop for a softer wildlife rhythm.
Route logic
Five to seven days is the safest first structure: two to three nights in the Mara, one night around Nakuru or Naivasha, and one to two nights in Amboseli. If time is short, cut the lake block before you cut the best game-drive windows.
Planning watchouts
Do not judge Kenya by park count alone. Lodge position, road time, and whether sunrise and sunset drives stay protected matter much more than squeezing in one extra reserve.
Maasai Mara National Reserve: Kenya's flagship safari zone, best for big cats, migration drama, and balloon flights; most first-time routes spend 2-3 nights here.
Amboseli National Park
Known for elephant herds with Kilimanjaro behind them, Amboseli is one of the strongest photography stops in a classic safari loop.
Lake Nakuru National Park: Strong for rhino tracking, birdlife, and easy viewpoints, Lake Nakuru works well as a one-night Rift Valley stop.
Lake Naivasha
Lake Naivasha gives a softer pace with Crescent Island walks, hippo boat rides, and Hell's Gate cycling instead of full-day game drives.
Nairobi
Signature stop in Kenya
Samburu National Reserve
Its semi-arid northern scenery and the Samburu Special Five make it better suited to repeat Kenya visitors or travelers wanting a quieter safari feel.
