What to focus on
Ethiopia is strongest when you choose a clear theme: rock-hewn churches, imperial history, or highland scenery. Lalibela, Gondar, and the Simien Mountains already create a very strong first trip if they are not crowded by too many extra flights.
Route logic
Seven to nine days is the safest cultural-highland structure: Addis as the entry point, then Lalibela and Gondar with time for the Simien Mountains. Shorter trips should stay focused on one historical cluster instead of chasing the whole map.
Planning watchouts
Do not underestimate altitude, road timing, and domestic-air connections. Ethiopia is rewarding, but the route only feels good when its logistics are treated with the same seriousness as its monuments.
Lalibela
Lalibela is not only about seeing church count. The real value is understanding how the rock-hewn complexes connect with pilgrimage rhythm, ritual space, and local life.
Gondar Fasil Ghebbi
Gondar works well as the urban-historic anchor of the northern circuit, giving better context for Ethiopian royal and religious history.
Simien Mountains
If you want Ethiopia to feel like more than churches and old towns, the Simien Mountains add escarpments, gelada baboons, and a broader trekking dimension.
Addis Ababa
Addis is more than a transit hub. Museums, coffee culture, and Mercato give useful first context before the country opens up further.
Danakil Depression
Danakil is better for longer or more advanced routes. The key decision is not whether it looks famous, but whether heat, road time, and logistics truly fit your plan.
