What to focus on
Azerbaijan is easiest to read through contrast: modern Baku, fire-landscape geology, and one Caucasus mountain-town block. That structure already shows why the destination feels different from its neighbors.
Route logic
Four to six days is the safest first route: two to three nights in Baku, a day for Gobustan and Absheron, and one to two nights in Sheki or another mountain-side stop. If the trip is short, keep the Baku-Sheki axis clean.
Planning watchouts
Do not overbuild Azerbaijan into too many regional detours. The first trip works best when urban contrast and one strong cultural road segment are given enough time to land properly.
Baku Old City
Baku is strongest not because of one landmark, but because of the contrast between the old city, the seafront boulevard, and modern architecture, which is what makes two nights worthwhile.
Gobustan
If you want Azerbaijan to feel deeper than a modern capital, Gobustan's rock art and mud volcanoes add a far older landscape story.
Sheki Khan's Palace
Sheki is ideal for a Silk Road old-town overnight, where the appeal comes not only from the palace itself but also from town scale, stained glass craft, and tea culture.
Khinaliq
For stronger Caucasus road scenery, Khinaliq-style mountain villages are often more memorable than city stops, but weather and road conditions matter.
Yanar Dag
Yanar Dag works best as a light Baku-side addition. It is not huge in scale, but it fits Azerbaijan's identity as a land of natural gas and flame.
